Nurses at one Brooklyn hospital voiced their displeasure Monday over what they say is a dangerously low number of nurses on staff.

Nurses at Methodist Hospital in Park Slope say the number of registered nurses per patients at Methodist is far too small.

They say the high caseloads put the patients at risk, and poor economic conditions shouldn't affect the conditions of patients.

"I know we are in economic hardship but definitely you cannot cut nurses. Nurses are the backbone of this institution," said Irving Campbell, a senior staff nurse.

"We need more RNs to take care of our patients. Here at Methodist, an average nurse has 10 to 12 patients per shift to take care of. Most hospitals have five to six, and it makes it very difficult for a nurse at New York Methodist hospital to take care of her patients well," said Maria Arizmendi, a senior staff nurse.

In a statement, the hospital says it is working to use limited resources as effectively as possible, and it's difficult to know how it could sustain an increase in staff.

The hospital also says it is in negotiations with the New York State Nurses Association, and staff ratios are being discussed.
