From a romantic Scottish couple to a musical superhero from New Jersey, "Rooms" and "The Toxic Avenger" are two rock musicals prepping to make their off-Broadway bows at New World Stages within the next few weeks. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report."Rooms", written by composer Paul Scott Goodman of "Bright Lights, Big City" the musical fame, stars young performers Doug Kreeger and Leslie Kritzer.
"'Rooms' is a rock romance. It's basically two Scottish kids, between 1977 and 1980. Ian, who is a song writer and Monica, who is sort of a wannabe superstar lyricist. And they sort of meet at a gig, they do a gig together and complete opposites and they sort of fall in love through all sorts of crazy circumstances," says Kreeger.
"Monica is kind of a manic, out there, always on, totally wants to be a star, wants to a celebrity, wants to be you know, a legend. And she's talented and good, but she meets Ian and needs a writer to help write. She's just a lyricist. So they fall in love, but mostly it's about her. But I think in meeting him, changes her forever," says Kritzer.
The other new project is a five-person musical comedy. Straight from a successful run at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, "The Toxic Avenger," based on the cult film of the same name, is about to make its off-Broadway debut.
Set against the backdrop of the mythical Tromaville, this new rock musical tells the story of Jersey's one and only superhero, the Toxic Avenger. Performer Nick Cordero makes his New York City debut as the title character.
"I play Melvin Ferd III, who is kind of geeky, sort of champion for the environment. And he is about to expose the mayor of his town as the one who owns the company who's causing all this pollution and she gets her goons to throw him in a vat of toxic goo and he emerges as the Toxic Avenger," says Cordero. "And so, drama ensues. I rip people about and, you know, get in trouble for it and all kinds of stuff. You've never seen a show like this. Trust me."
Two unlikely collaborators - Joe DiPietro of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and David Bryan of Bon Jovi - created the book and score for the mutant freak.
"You know, my world coming into theater is I don't have a lot of experience in theater, but I have a hell of a lot of experience in rock. So it's rock and roll songs," says Bryan. "And some of the lyrics are funny, but you know there's the ballad and the love song, there's the big rocker, there's funny stuff. It's based on rock. They're songs. For me, it's a chorus. It's radio friendly songs. For my line of work, once you play a song you should be able to sing it back. So hopefully I've accomplished that."
While the romantic duo from "Rooms" have already taken the spotlight at New World Stages, "The Toxic Avenger" will morph into life on March 18.
