A plea deal could be in the works for former Nasdaq chairman Bernard Madoff, who is accused of swindling $50 billion from investors.

The United States Attorney's Office says in a court brief that Madoff, above middle, waived his right to have a grand jury hear the case, agreeing instead to be charged directly by prosecutors. Such language is used when plea deals are ready to happen.

The U.S. Attorney's office said in a court brief that Madoff is ready to waive an indictment. However, neither side is willing to confirm it.

Madoff is accused of orchestrating a massive $50 billion Ponzi scheme which wiped out the life savings of investors worldwide.

Investigators have not been able to uncover any legitimate investments made by the fund.

The judge in the case will allow the alleged victims to tell their stories at Madoff's hearing next week.

Meanwhile, the first checks are being sent out to some of the scam's victims.

Members from an industry-funded organization are working on hundreds of reimbursement claims.

They did not detail how much the first checks were for, but say investors are eligible for up to $500,000 and have until July to file.

Madoff remains under house arrest in Manhattan.
