Coney Island residents were vocal during Community Board 13's hearing Tuesday night, outlining the city's plans to rezone the area.

Those plans include 27 acres for an amusement park, mixed income housing, retail space and hotels. The hearing was a way for residents to voice their thoughts on the plan.

"It's a framework, it's a zoning proposal, it is going through a public review process. This is exactly the sort of thing that a public review is about," said Purnima Kapur, Department of City Planning.

One major concern is there isn't enough space allotted for the amusement park, Coney Island's main attraction.

"This plan betrays Coney Island's amusement park, it is second rate, it is not what we need for Coney Island to be a world class tourist attraction," said one resident.

Others say the city's plans for building out the area and making it more than just a theme park are key to developing a community.

"All they see is the amusements and some park stuff, no no no, this is about building change giving our kids a choice about what they can accomplish and where they go with this."

The next step in the rezoning process is the community board vote.

A spokesperson for the developer on the project, Thor Equities, says they are urging the board to vote 'no' because they think the city's plans fall short.
