When the new school year starts, parents will have more choices on where to send their children, as the city will open 42 new schools in old and new buildings.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and other elected officials gathered Sunday at Brooklyn's Sunset Park High School, which is set to open this fall.

City officials say the new schools will include three transfer schools.

"Instead of looking for kids who fit the needs of the school system, which is how it used to be, we have now designed a school system that fits the needs of the kids," said Klein. "And that is a powerful transformation and the results are apparent. We have more kids graduating, more kids going to college than any time in the modern era in this city."

More than 300 new schools have been created under the Bloomberg administration since 2002.
