The law firm Latham and Watkins, which has an office in Manhattan, is the latest law firm to be hit hard by the ailing economy.

The company announced Friday the layoff of 440 employees, including 10 percent of their associates.

The firm says they have to adjust their staffing levels to the changing needs of the economy.

In a statement the company said it is offering a separation package, including six months' salary and medical benefits.

The prestigious law firm has 28 offices all over the world.
