It is a battle of the brides-to-be at Filene's Basement in Union Square today.

The annual wedding gown sale, known as the Running of the Brides, started in 1947.

It offers bridal gowns, at big discount prices. A designer gown could go for as little as $250.

Many stood in line for hours waiting for the doors to open at 8 a.m.

Once inside, the brides and their helpers stripped the racks bare in seconds, blindly grabbing as many gowns as possible.

"We just grabbed. You can't focus," said a mother of the bride. "There's too much pushing and shoving. So we grabbed what we could."

"I'm tired. But I did really well," said a shopper. "I found a dress that I love."

"A $900 dress for $249, and I won a contest. I got a gift certificate for $249, so guess what? My wedding dress is free!" said another.

Filene's is open until 10 p.m.

Store representatives say despite the early rush, there are usually plenty of gowns available throughout the day.
