Doctors at a city hospital in the Bronx are helping a teenager from Afghanistan overcome a childhood injury.
Wahida Sher Agha, 16, fell off a bridge by her home in Kabul eight years ago. Since then, she could barely open her mouth.
Agha was set to undergo surgery at private hospitals in Boston and Connecticut, but both fell through. With the help of doctors at Jacobi Medical Center they were able to get the funding and perform the surgery.
Agha spoke exclusively to NY1 and says she is grateful for the help she's received in the last eight months while preparing for the surgery.
"This family I'm living with, the Shapiro family, is very nice family. I love this family," said Agha.
"We're just so happy to be able to help her," said Melissa Shapiro, who's hosting Agha.
The surgery involved taking a bone from her rib to repair her jaw.
Doctors say after some physical therapy her mouth will be able to open properly again.
