NY1’s Stephanie Simon filed the following report.
Marlon Daniel's passion for piano is elemental. Daniel is the organizer of the concert series "Piano Passions." One of the concerts in the series will focus on the four elements -- earth, air, water and fire.
“And we've gotten four world premiers. Four great composers that are New York based composers, doing four new works for us. And four visual artists combining forces to do a spectacular multi-media mini recital for each one of the elements,” said Daniel.
The concerts take place at the Tenri Cultural Institute in the West Village and Merkin Concert Hall on the Upper West Side. For the Elements concert, Daniel asked local composer Hampson Sisler to create a work inspired by Central Park.
“It's always busy, even in the winter time. And at dusk it's settling down for the night. So it starts somewhat vigorously than it quiets a bit than it picks up speed again at the end. I was just thinking about depicting the skyline and than the park itself in the winter season when there's snow on the ground, and the cold and the ice and so forth,” said Sisler.
Piano player Beatrice Long is also performing a world premier and will use a Russian piece to represent fire.
Not only is it a community event, it's also a family affair. Long's 10-year-old son, Darren, contributed photographs for the element of fire.
“I was playing around with this fire idea and I noticed my son is really drawn to color and fire and the fusion of lights. He has a lot of work that is actually associated, very appropriate for this piece. So you know he and I sat down together went through all the work and we put together this theme of going from a dark region towards the portal of fire. Yeah this attraction to the light is kind of a dangerous but attractive and at the same time, you know just like, blazing,” said Long.
“They are basically lights, but I did something to them,” said Darren Long.
Sometimes the most intriguing element is the element of surprise.
The 4 Elements concert will be held at Tenri Cultural Institute on Saturday, February 28, 2009.
