Study: New York Is Second-Most Congested City

A study by the traffic data analysis company INRIX finds that five of the six worst bottleneck areas in the country are in New York City.

The study ranks New York as the second-most congested city; only Los Angeles was worse.

The Cross Bronx Expressway at the interchange of Bronx River Parkway was named the worst bottleneck in the nation. The stretch can see up to 94 hours of traffic a week, with an average speed of only 11 miles per hour during the day.

Among the other top bottleneck areas are the Sheridan Expressway, the Cross Bronx at White Plains Road, Harlem River Drive South at Third Avenue, and the Van Wyck Expressway Northbound at Liberty Avenue.

Some drivers on the Cross Bronx say the roadway tests their patience.

"In New York City, most of the time, it's always bumper to bumper," said a driver. "It's a lot of people in this city and a lot of cars also. You can be on this highway maybe for another half an hour."

"It's difficult every single day," said another. "It needs at least another level, like a second level."

Rounding out the top five most congested cities are Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and Washington.

The traffic information was collected using tens of billions of data points from cars and trucks equipped with two-way GPS systems.

Researchers say there was a 30 percent drop nationwide in traffic congestion last year, the likely result of higher gas prices and higher unemployment.
