Ferreras Captures Monserrate's Council Seat In Special Election
Returns from Tuesday's special elections show that Julissa Ferreras has captured the City Council seat previously held by her boss.
Three council seats in Queens and Staten Island were up for grabs in Tuesday's city elections.
Based on 99 percent of precincts reporting in the race for the 21st District in Queens, Ferreras captured the seat previously held by Hiram Monseratte. Ferreras – who was formerly Monserrate's chief of staff – received 2,216 votes to Francisco Moya's 1,191.
George Dixon received 781 votes, and Jose Giraldo received 639.
In District 32, returns showed Eric Ulrich defeating Lew Simon, 3,316 votes to 2,502. Ulrich, a Republican district leader, works in development and fundraising at a church in Ozone Park.
Geraldine Chapey received 846 votes while Mike Riccato received 651.
On Staten Island, Kenneth Mitchell was holding on to a razor-thin 34-vote lead over Deborah Rose in the race to fill Michael McMahon's empty seat in the 49th District.
All precincts reported their results by Tuesday night, but 395 absentee ballots had yet to be counted and neither candidate had claimed victory as of early Wednesday morning.
Mitchell received 4,130 votes Tuesday to Rose's 4,096. Tony Baker received 849 votes in the race, John Tobbaco received 707, Paul Saryian received 538 and Donald Pagano received 532.
