As part of the station's coverage of Black History Month, NY1 reporters have filed reports on individuals who have been moved to engage in community service since the election of President Barack Obama. Borough reporter Dean Meminger filed the following report on a Bronx doctor who wants to provide his community with subsidized mental healthcare.

Dr. Derek Suite of Parkchester, Bronx says it is time to make a change when it comes to mental health services. He says the historic election of President Barack Obama has actually been therapeutic for his clients and himself.

"So many times we tell ourselves, and I tell myself, 'No, I don't think I can do that,'" says Suite. "Well, a 'Yes I can' orientation helps me overcome any the barriers I feel personally."

Ten years ago, Suite and his wife Darcel Dillard-Suite overcame a big barrier by opening their Full Circle Health clinic on East Tremont Avenue, offering psychiatric counseling and what they call "life coaching."

Along with helping New Yorkers, the Suites say over the last decade their practice has provided counseling for victims of September 11th and Hurricane Katrina.

But it has become difficult raising money for the nonprofit part of their business that helps the uninsured.

"Our phones are ringing off of the hook - folks are losing their jobs," says Dillard-Suite. "The folks are out there, finding the people won't be the problem. Finding the funding usually is."

To help a growing need, the Suites started a grassroots movement to raise funds for people who need counseling but can not afford it, called their "10-for-1 Initiave."

"For every person that can give $10, we are going to be able to help at least one family," says Dillard-Suite. "That family could be a mother who lost there job, or a child who can't cope because a parent lost a job."

"Let's see what $5, $10 can do. This has lead to us creating a campaign, creating our own mental health stimulus package," says Suite. "How can we help folks who don't have insurance, don't have money, who've lost jobs, suffering as a result."

The Suites know it will be hard raising money to help everyone who needs free counseling, but helping a few people is a step in the right direction.

"With less we can do more," says Suite. "Even with less, we can do more."

Like Obama, the Suites say they want to unite all people for the cause. Derek Suite's brother is helping out and staff and volunteers are getting involved.

"If this campaign works, which I have a strong feeling that it will, it will take a lot of people out of their misery," says volunteer Tracy Humphreys.
