The young players on the New York Stars hockey team will face some international competition, when the second-annual Lighthouse Cup tournament kicks off today.
The players will face three local teams and five teams from around the world, including China, Japan and Finland.
The New York Islanders are hosting the games at their home venue, Nassau Coliseum.
"I'm exited for the kids. They put in so much work during the week and during the year," said the team's head coach, John O'Brien. "It's just a great ending to the season. It's going to be such an experience playing with kids from other countries. It's going to be a really great experience."
The young hockey players admitted they could not yet size up their opponents.
"We don't know who they are, what they do, we don't know how they play. It's going to be hard," said forward James Ciminelli.
"We don't know their way of playing hockey and how they like to pass and shoot," said defense player Bryan McKernan.
The Lighthouse Cup features "Friendship Games," where players form new teams with their new friends.
"I like to have new friends and meet new people from different cultures and everything so I think it would be great to do that," said forward Jimmy Carney.
"We all have one thing in common - we like to play hockey. So, I don't think making friends is going to be that hard," said defense player Tyler D'Agostino.
"It's different cultures but the same sport. We all think the same. It's hockey, it's a great sport," said forward Ryan Perry.
The tournament goes through Saturday.
