As the state looks for ways to cut into the budget deficit, a new survey released today shows New Yorkers support increasing taxes on the wealthy.

Albany lawmakers have differed on whether to implement harsher taxes on top earners.

But, according to a Quinnipiac University poll of registered voters, when it comes to the public, the so-called "millionaires tax" has very strong support, with 79 percent of those surveyed in favor of a higher tax rate on people who make more than $1 million year.

The poll finds 18 percent of New Yorkers are against the tax.

There is overwhelming support for the measure across party lines.

That sentiment continues when it comes to raising taxes on those who make at least $500,000 – with 72 percent in favor and 25 percent against. There is also support for a tax on those who make at least $250,000 per year, although the numbers do drop considerably. The poll finds 56 percent of New Yorkers are for the tax, with 40 percent against it.

Republicans oppose higher tax rates on those who make at least $250,000 a year by a large margin.

Yet, more New Yorkers support cutting state services before raising taxes.

If taxes must go up, New Yorkers prefer an increase in the sales tax, over income tax.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,065 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
