Police say officers on their way to a reported armed robbery inside a subway station came across a man hitting a woman with a baseball bat near West 52nd Street and Broadway.

As officers approached the man, he jumped into a car police say was waiting for him. Police pursued the car on foot.

The female driver tried to get away, but slammed into a garbage truck at 52nd Street and Seventh Avenue.

The assault suspect was killed in the crash. The driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The assault victim was taken to the hospital, where her condition is described as stable.
