College-bound students and their parents received some useful tips Sunday during a financial aid seminar in Harlem. NY1's Tara Lynn Wagner filed the following report.

Like many parents, Tanisha Perry is trying to figure out how to swing the cost of college. Her son, Taun, hopes to attend Marist College in 2010.

They were among those who attended "College Goal Sunday". As part of the nationwide event, the YMCA sponsored seminars in three out of five boroughs.

"There's all types of ways to pay for college and we want to make sure that our families have the tools, the resources and the know how to be able to do it the smart way," said Lauran Barr, Director of Teen Programs, YMCA.

Parents and students learned about the three categories of financial aid that include scholarships, low interest government loans and loans from private institutions -- which are the loans that are drying up in these days of tight credit.

One of the measures in the economic stimulus plan, now working its way through Congress, would give a $2,500 tax credit to parents paying for college.

Ayana Keyes, a high school junior, says she plans to pursue all options to fulfill her dream of attending Spelman College in Atlanta.

"Many many scholarships, a lot of essay writing over the summer, the FAFSA, my mom, and if worse comes to worse one or two loans," said Keyes.

Before they can access funding, students have to fill out a FAFSA form which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's an intimidating nine page document that requires lots of additional information.

"They need their W2s. They need their drivers license information. They need receipts from their children's employers if their children work," said Barr.
