The pilot who safely guided US Airways flight 1549 into the Hudson is being honored today in his hometown.

Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger was greeted with music and an honor guard in Danville, Calif., a suburb of San Francisco.

The pilot was humble when he talked about the crash.

"Circumstance determined that it was this experienced crew that was scheduled to fly that particular flight on that particular day,” said Sullenberger. “But I know I can speak for the entire crew when I tell you we were just doing our jobs we were trained to do. Thank you!"

"I have to say that we are completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and love and cards, there's no words, there are no words," said Lorrie Sullenberger, the pilot’s wife.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pulled the plane's left engine from the Hudson River Friday.

Shards of metal and wiring were hanging out and a large portion of the outer shell was missing.

Sullenberger decided to ditch in the Hudson after officials say birds flew into both the plane's engines and crippled the jet.
