Former boxing champ and local activist José Torres has died.

The 1965 light heavyweight champion and Olympic silver medalist died of a heart attack in his native Puerto Rico at age 72.

After hanging up his gloves, Torres became an author, chaired the New York State Athletic Commission, and became a supervisor for the World Boxing Organization.

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez praised Torres as a community activist and fighter for minorities and poor people.
