As New Yorkers prepare for a cold blast that's expected to last through the weekend, city officials are reminding residents to take necessary precautions and report heating problems immediately. NY1's Taunia Hottman filed the following report from Brooklyn.The bitterly cold weather that has gripped the city, is more than a nuisance to some. New Yorkers who work outside are going to great lengths and layers to protect themselves.
"My long johns, double socks, three or four sweaters under here. I'm nice and warm," said Pedro Hernandez, a city resident who works in Brooklyn.
"You just gotta keep your feet warm, your hands warm, something over your head if you like dealing with it. If not, don't do it," said James Drayton, a city resident who works in Brooklyn.
Later this week, New Yorkers could see the coldest temperatures in almost two years. As temperatures dip into the single digits, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is calling on everyone to take responsibility for themselves. If your apartment is without heat or you don't have hot water, the mayor does not want you to wait for help.
"Pick up the phone, call 311. We will get the landlord to fix it or we will do it ourselves. You should not have to suffer and incidently this cold wave is going to be a dangerous one. It is going to be very cold so it's not just that you're gonna be inconvenienced, your health may very well be at risk. so call 311," said Bloomberg.
On Fulton Mall in Brooklyn, some people NY1 spoke with actually said they enjoy this type of weather. They said it's not so bad if your prepared, and that's exactly what being a New Yorker is all about.
"We get to wear a coat, we get to wear fur, so it's fun," said Brooklyn resident Lisa Karla.
"Come on, we are going into February now. February and March are the coldest months of the year coming 'round," said another Brooklyn resident.
