Murders in Manhattan fell to a record low in 2008.

The Manhattan district attorney's office released figures today showing that there were 62 murders recorded in the borough last year – the fewest since the city began keeping statistics in the 1930s.

The number is also a 10-percent drop from last year and a huge drop from the all-time high of 661 recorded in 1972.

The borough had more homicides that year than the entire city recorded in 2008.

Overall felony crime in Manhattan dropped 4.5 percent from 2007.

The district attorney says the only category of crime that increased was rape, which rose 1.6 percent.
