After a light snowfall brushed the city, several inches of freezing rain were expected to fall between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
NY1 Meteorologist John Davitt predicted Saturday evening that a steady downpour of sleet and freezing rain would take place between 6 p.m. and continue through 2 a.m. Sunday.
One to three inches of ice and snow are said to accumulate by Sunday morning. Many in the city must also deal with icy and slippery sidewalks.
The rain and snow showers will taper off by noon Sunday with no additional accumulation.
Salters may be busy on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, but airport delays are expected to be minor.
On Friday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg noted that 140,000 tons of salt were ready to be dumped on city streets and things were expected to return to normal by Monday.
The Port Authority says travelers flying this weekend should still check with airlines about potential delays.
