A City Council hopeful has temporarily suspended his campaign after his campaign bus hit and killed a nine-year-old boy crossing a street in Queens.
Ibrihim Ahmed was on his way home from school when he was hit at the intersection of Cross Bay Boulevard at Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park yesterday afternoon.
Police arrested the driver, Alexander Aponte, 22, for driving with a suspended license. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Manhattan's resident's license had been suspended since December 3rd.
The bus was being used to promote City Council candidate Mike Ricatto's campaign. He's running in a special election for the council seat being vacated by newly-elected State Senator Joseph Addabbo.
Ricatto said in a statement that he is deeply saddened by the accident. Ricatto said that as a father, he cannot imagine the pain of losing a child.
He has suspended all campaign activities until further notice.
