New changes in the Department of Building's regulations aim to maintain high-rise construction safety and prevent fatal fires.
Standpipes will now undergo weekly inspections to make sure there are no breaches throughout the building. Water connections and valves on each floor below the construction will be inspected daily.
In 2007, two firefighters died battling flames at the former Deutsche Bank building in Downtown Manhattan, which was severely damaged after the collapse of the trade center during the September 11th attacks.
Investigators found the sprinkler system in the Deutsche Bank building had been dismantled, a standpipe cut and the fire exits had been blocked off.
