On the coldest New Year's Day in the last decade, the polar bears of Coney Island herded together Thursday and took their annual plunge into the ocean.

Some had to be gently escorted in while others went willingly.

"I'm frozen. It's like walking in cement," said one participant.

"Honestly, it feels really refreshing. Its not that bad," said another participant.

Those who took part in the annual plunge, may have been the only New Yorkers smiling during Thursday's frigid weather which topped out at around 25 degrees. It makes you wonder if there really is something to it.

"We believe that swimming in the water once a week or more strengthens the immune system, makes you strong. It takes away all the pain in your body," said Louie Scarcella, Coney Island Polar Bear Club.

"In a weird way, it feels really great even though it's really painful. It's a weird balance," said one participant.

The Coney Island Polar Bears aren't just doing this for kicks. They're raising money for Camp Sunshine, a camp for kids with cancer.

Those who stayed indoors and did not take the plunge can find out more information at FreezinForAReason.com.
