The federal courthouse in Brooklyn was renamed Tuesday to honor former President Theodore Roosevelt.

Senator Charles Schumer and descendants of the Roosevelt family gathered in front of what is now the Theodore Roosevelt United States Courthouse in Brooklyn Heights for a renaming ceremony.

Schumer said the importance of honoring Roosevelt's legacy stems from his dedication to the country and his home state of New York as a governor and assemblyman.

"Just because somebody lived a while ago doesn't mean we should forget them. And that's why we're here naming the courthouse for Theodore Roosevelt," said Schumer.

"It's a wonderful tribute and I'm thankful to Schumer for doing it," said Theodore Roosevelt IV, the former president's great-grandson. "And it's another recognition of T.R.'s deep roots to New York City and Long Island."

Schumer was the author of legislation renaming the courthouse, and President George Bush signed the bill in to law on September 17.
