More sightseers visited New York this year then ever before, but the tourism industry stalled due to a global recession.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said about 47 million people visited the city in 2008 -- that's about a million more then last year.
During their visits, tourists generated $30 billion dollars in spending. That's another record, up a billion dollars from 2007.
However, the spending jump is smaller then the city has seen in recent years.
The city said that international tourists were responsible for this years increase.
