Senator Charles Schumer said Barack Obama's economic stimulus package could provide some much needed economic relief for the state.
Schumer said it's expected to include an infusion of about $5 billion annually for medicaid.
He also said he's pushing for up to $4 billion for mass transit to help with infrastructure projects like the seventh avenue subway and to help create jobs.
"This will help the overall budget situation, because every dollar sent to New York by the federal government is one less dollar that the state has to get by raising taxes or laying off people or cutting taxes," said Schumer.
Schumer hopes some of the money will also offset the MTA's "doomsday budget" unveiled earlier this month which calls for a 23 percent fare hike, service cuts and the elimination of some subway lines.
