Every penny counts during these tough economic times, and state government may help New Yorkers see a little more money.
The state comptroller's office is holding $9 billion in unclaimed cash, which comes from bank dividends, insurance payments, court settlements and tax rebates, among other sources.
There are 23 million such accounts statewide, including two belonging to people in the five boroughs with $1.4 million and $1 million in waiting. One resident in New York City's suburbs is owed $1.7 million.
However, about 60 percent of the accounts are valued at less than $100.
The comptroller already paid out $194 million in previously unclaimed money over the past year.
