New York Cares volunteers spent Thursday giving out hundreds coats to those in need at the New York City Rescue Mission in Downtown Manhattan.
The charity usually collects between 80,000 to 90,000 coats a year, but numbers have slumped and organizers are worried they will have 8,000 coats fewer than usual.
"We're guessing it's probably the economic situation, maybe people are holding to their coats a little longer, they're a little concerned,” said Gary Bagley, New York Cares’s executive director. “We're really asking people to dig deep into their closets and come out."
New York Cares will be collecting coats until the end of the month, but is extending collection at two sites in Penn Station and Bryant Park until January 9.
