Senator Charles Schumer announced today in his Manhattan office the winners of his statewide lottery to attend President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration.
Of the 175 pairs of tickets distributed to New York State residents, 85 went to people from the five boroughs. More then 150,000 New Yorkers entered the lottery in hopes of seeing Obama sworn in on January 20 on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
"We tried to figure out, well, how can we be fair?" said Schumer. "And the only way to do it, the democratic - small d - way to do it was a lottery."
Those who hit the jackpot could not believe their luck.
"I'm very humbled, there are others who deserve it more," said lottery winner Marcos de Jesus.
Patsy Gouldborne and her sister Ana Gouldborne-Passley of Wakefield, Bronx are also winners, after one tipped the other about Schumer's lottery.
"She sent me the link, I filled it out, and she filled it out as well. Mine was selected," said Gouldborne-Passley. "I had to read it several times. She said I called her late, but she says I was screaming when I called her about it."
"We talked about it over the years and to actually sit there and have an opportunity to go out and watch it, it's unspeakable," said Gouldborne. "It's going to bring tears to my eyes, but I won't do it now."
Tickets will be handed out at Schumer's Washington office on January 19. Schumer says only the 175 winners can pick up the tickets, which are unable to be traded.
"No one will be able to sell the tickets. I don't even think anyone here would want to sell the tickets. They want to go!" said Schumer.
At the inauguration ceremony, Rick Warren, the leader of the Saddleback Church, will give the invocation and civil rights leader Joseph Lowery will deliver a benediction.
Scheduled performers include legendary singer Aretha Franklin and world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
