A touching procession was held in the city Tuesday as survivors of domestic abuse held a mock funeral.

Drawing attention to the need for housing for victims of domestic abuse, the group started their march in front of the city housing authority offices downtown.

Protestors said it is too difficult for abused women to get affordable housing, often causing them to go back to their abuser.

"It shouldn't take two police reports and an order of protection. If they have one sufficient police report that's enough. Everyone don't have two incidents. It should not take two incidents for someone to get killed, or have to go back home for another incident to be able to qualify for NYCHA or section 8," said Housing Specialist Sajri Henderson.

"We're really calling on the housing authority and the mayor to do something about this. And really give battered women an option so that they are able to leave their abuser," said Susan Lob, Voices of Women Organizing Project.

In a statement, NYCHA said it's made major strides in helping victims of domestic violence qualify for public housing including expanding the types of permissible documentation needed to apply and speeding up the processing of applications.
