A Dominican organization is now one step closer to opening its headquarters in Washington Heights.

The final steel beam was added Tuesday to the future Alianza Dominicana building.

It took five years to start construction on the building.

The organization and its building will serve as a resource for the Dominican community in the neighborhood.

"We can go in to be excited about our culture, teach our kids about the wonderful Dominican culture, and also be able to receive services that this community still very much needs," said Lilliam Perez, a resident.

"It's something that we have been waiting for some time, and it's today is affirming that yes, we are going to be in this community for a long, long time," said Milagros Batista, a Alianza Dominicana representative.

Work will begin on the interior of the building when the exterior is finished in about three months.
