The New York Giants distanced themselves Thursday from the decision by hospital workers not to inform police that receiver Plaxico Burress had shot himself in the leg.

The team released a statement Wednesday saying that no one from the Giants had any involvement with any decision by the hospital concerning its reporting requirements relating to gunshot wounds.

The team admitted that linebacker Antonio Pierce called Giants Vice President of Medical Services Ronnie Barnes shortly after the shooting to ask what hospital Burress should be taken to. Barnes suggested he be taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Authorities are trying to determine whether Pierce tried to cover up the shooting over the weekend at a Manhattan nightclub.

Police are scheduled to speak with Pierce on Friday and still have to speak with teammate Ahmad Bradshaw.

In a Thursday news conference, Pierce would not answer questions on the incident, and instead said that life has "bumps on the road."

Instead, Pierce focused on Sunday's game with against the Philadelphia Eagles. If the Giants will that game, they will win their division.

"This Sunday is no different from the opener, no different from the playoffs or the Super Bowl. I get on the football field, my focus is winning the game, doing my job and having my team win," said Pierce.

Fellow Giants said the team was not distracted by the incident.

"[Pierce] has his back up against the wall, but we’re a family, definitely behind him 100 percent,” said cornerback Sam Madison. “We’re with him in all the situations that he’s going through."

“When distractions come across, we know how to divert that and just play football," said defensive end Justin Tuck.

Meanwhile, the hospital that treated Burress has since suspended Dr. Josyann Abisaab for failing to report the shooting to police, as required by law.

Burress faces weapons possession charges and is free on $100,000 bail.
