Police were searching Wednesday night for the gunman who shot and killed a 14-year-old Brooklyn boy.
The shooting occurred Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. on Kingston Avenue near Herkimer Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Police say there was some sort of dispute between two young women and that young men became involved.
One man shot into the crowd and Mario Smith was hit in the chest. The seventh-grader was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Smith's family remembered him as a fun-loving teenager.
"He loved to dress, he loved MySpace, he loved life," said the victim's aunt, Ray David. "And he loved people. This is a tragedy, it really is for an innocent kid like that."
"My heart has been destroyed. That's my oldest nephew. He is only fourteen years old. I am hurt," said Jamel Smith, the victim's uncle.
Smith's death left the community outraged.
"As far as the community, if you know something say something, and let's get to the bottom of this," said family friend Umar Jordan.
"Let's go and eradicate this crime out of our community. That's the only way that it's going to get done," said community activist Anthony Herbert. "It can't get done by the NYPD by themselves, it's not going to get done by Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg or the governor. It's going to be done by us in the community, standing together, and making a change. So, the challenge is that we all come together, we sit down at a table, and we decide how we're gonna eradicate this viciousness out of our community."
