Edward Cardinal Egan spearheaded an effort Tuesday to give needy New York families the chance for a Thanksgiving dinner.
Egan and Mets legend Rusty Staub were on hand for a Harlem turkey giveaway, hosted by Catholic Charities. About 350 turkeys were handed out to needy families, along with all the trimmings for a holiday meal.
"We're celebrating thanksgiving the way we ought to celebrate it," said Egan. "Being sure those who might not have everything for a great Thanksgiving dinner have it, and have it in style."
"A lot of people who are losing their jobs today, and as you can see, there's a lot of people here who need the help,” said Thresa Later, who received a turkey. “And it’s a great thing that they're doing to help the community."
"I appreciate it and listen, I couldn't do without Catholic Charities. They are my family," said Mae Bell Parham, who also received a turkey.
Staub and the New York Archdiocese donated most of the food.
