The Silver Towers Complex in Greenwich Village was made a city landmark Tuesday.

Members of the Landmarks Preservation Commission granted the status after a five-year campaign by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and support from the community.

Residents of the towers and members of the NYU community are thrilled.

"The architecture is certainly reflective of its era. It reflects a certain day and time and we're glad that that'll be around for decades to come," said Gary Parker, the NYU Director of Government and Community Affairs.

The newly-designated landmark was designed by I.M. Pei and houses a sculpture by Pablo Picasso at its center.

Supporters were worried over a proposal by NYU to put a 40-story tower in the middle of that complex.
