The economic downturn could be hurting enrollment at the city's Catholic Schools.

The Archdiocese of New York saw enrollment drop by nearly 6,000 students this year, at elementary and high schools in Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx.

Elementary schools in the Brooklyn Archdiocese also saw a drop of about 5 percent.

Sagging enrollment has led to the closing of dozens of schools in recent years.

Officials say they are working to make Catholic schools more attractive and affordable to low and middle-income families.

The average Catholic high school tuition is $5,500.
