The city is reportedly nixing a plan to centralize the kindergarten application process.

The plan to centralize the process by which parents choose a kindergarten was first announced by Schools Chancellor Joel Klein in January. It called for parents to send ranked choices of schools to a central office.

But the New York Times reports the Department of Education decided to scrap the new system because it was marred by snags, prompting complaints from parents.

Detractors said the centrally-processed application form is an impersonal introduction to the public school system.

The DOE will require schools to follow the admissions rules that were governing the centralized applications. That includes a uniform timetable for submission of applications.
