State lawmakers could throw a roadblock in front of the mayor's plan to run for a third term.

Brooklyn State Senator Kevin Parker introduced legislation today that would prevent city officials from running for a third term without the approval of voters.

While Parker says he has never supported the idea of term limits, he thinks the city's new law limits voters' rights.

"To brazenly push them aside and attempt to silence their voices is not what we should do as elected officials," said Parker in a statement. "For this, I am sponsoring a bill on the state level that will change term limits for the entire state."

Democratic Leader Malcolm Smith says he is not opposed to allowing the legislation come to a vote.

This comes a day after Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver expressed similar feelings about an identical bill introduced in the State Assembly by Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries.

Silver said yesterday he is not ready to take a stance on the issue.

The bill adds a clause making it retroactive to ensure that if passed, it would undo the recent extension of city term limits.

The city could sue if the bill passes the state Legislature. And Governor David Paterson, who supported Bloomberg's bid to extend his time in office, would likely veto any bill.

Bloomberg has a long history of tension with state lawmakers. Both congestion pricing and plans for a West Side stadium, died in Albany.
