A police officer shot and killed a man outside a Brooklyn truant center Thursday.

According to police, the superintendent of the Coney Island Gospel Assembly Church said he spotted a man in his mid-20s breaking into a car shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday. The super then alerted police officers assigned to the truancy center located in the church basement.

When the two police officers and two school safety agents approached the suspect, police say he lunged at them with a wooden folding chair.

Police say a female officer told the man both in English and Spanish to drop the chair and when he did not, she shot him once in the chest.

He was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The female police officer was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where she was treated for trauma.

Hours later, residents were still reacting to the shooting.

"I don't think that was right," said one local resident. "I don't think they should have shot him."

"I'm quite sure they could have done something other than shoot him," said another. "They could have sprayed mace in his face, or if there were enough cops down there, they could have rushed him. It wasn't necessary that he got shot."

The Associated Press reported Thursday evening that the results from the policewoman's mandatory alcohol test came back negative.

As of Thursday evening, police said it was too early to determine whether the shooting was justified.
