Mayor Michael Bloomberg met behind closed doors with City Council members Friday to discuss the controversial Willets Point rezoning in Queens.
Despite the sometimes contentious nature of the issue, the mayor struck a positive note.
"It's a great opportunity for the city to build 5,000 units of housing, to create 5,000 jobs. To take an area which, it's not fair to say it's blighted…. It's ‘seen its better days’ is a fair way to phrase it."
The mayor said the city has already struck deals with some of the property owners and hopes others will follow suit.
A vote is scheduled on the issue in two weeks.
