A fire tore through a row of stores in Flushing, Queens early Wednesday morning, heavily damaging a few businesses and disrupting the rush-hour commute for some.

Firefighters say flames broke out around 2:30 a.m. on the top two floors of a four-story commercial building on Roosevelt Avenue near Main Street. The fire quickly spread to a building next door.

Neither building was occupied at the time. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the fire was unclear Wednesday.

"It's under investigation," said FDNY Chief John Maguire. "I believe it started on the top floor, communicated on to the top floor of the beauty salon, occupying basically the top two floors of those buildings."

"Since living here for 12 years, we had a couple of fire incidents before," said local resident Steve Nicklas. "A lot of the people on the street, like the drunk people and all that, do that stuff – go in the hallways, smoke cigarettes. But personally I have no idea who could have done this."

Two hair salons, a psychic reader's office, and apartment were gutted on the second and third floors of two buildings. A Payless shoe store, Taco Bell, and Asian supermarket on the ground were seriously damaged by water.

The water used to put out the flames gushed onto the tracks at the Main Street subway station caused some temporary problems on the Number 7 line.

"Cascade of water was coming from street to platform, so it was not safe to let people walk over that area," explained John Hoban, general manger of the 7 train.

Throughout Wednesday, buses were detoured on the Q12, Q15, Q26, Q44, Q17 and Q27 lines.
