A Serbian basketball player charged in the beating of a fellow Binghamton University student has been arrested in Serbia.
Miladin Kovacevic, 21, fled to Serbia after being charged with felony assault following a brawl at an upstate bar that left Bryan Steinhauer of Brooklyn in a coma.
A spokesman for Serbia's prosecution office told the Associated Press that Kovacevic was detained on suspicion he "inflicted severe bodily harm" to Steinhauer last May.
He says the arrest followed a decision earlier this month by United States officials to hand over an investigating file on Kovacevic's case to the Serbian judiciary. It's not yet clear if or when he will be formally charged.
Serbia's police media office says the diplomat who allegedly helped Kovacevic flee the U.S. was also arrested. He's suspected of forging the travel documents.
Senator Chuck Schumer says he still wants Kovacevic brought to justice in the U.S., but today's actions by Serbia are a big step.
"The wheels of justice are grinding inexorably forward," said Schumer. "And although there is not going to be a resolution in the next five minutes, the ring has clearly tightened."
Steinhauer remains hospitalized. There are reports that he has emerged from his coma.
His parents issued a statement today saying they are gratified justice is taking its course.
