The mother of an 11-year-old girl who was found dead inside her Brooklyn home Sunday has been arrested, along with her live-in boyfriend, in connection with the girl's death.
Florencia Moral Vazquez was arraigned early Monday morning on charges of murder, manslaughter and criminal negligent homicide in the death of 11-year-old Alejandra Vasquez.
The mother's boyfriend, Andres Pavon-Balderas, was charged at the same time with manslaughter and criminal negligent homicide.
The medical examiner ruled Alejandra's death was caused by child abuse syndrome.
A law enforcement official told the Associated Press Monday that the mother had confessed to beating the girl with a mop handle on Thursday out of hatred for the girl's father.
The source went on to say that Vazquez was chased around the apartment and beaten until the mop broke and the girl was vomiting and bleeding.
Police were not called to the family's East New York apartment until Sunday morning. When they arrived, Vazquez was already dead in her bed.
The medical examiner says the girl had blunt impact injuries to her head, torso and extremities.
The A.P. reports that Alejandra had come from Mexico only about a month ago to her mother's apartment.
The Administration for Children's services says a teenager had recently been removed from the home, and now three other young children have been removed. Sources say their ages are one, three, and six.
Community members held a vigil for Alejandra last night. They are trying to raise money for the girl's funeral, which will be held tomorrow.
