As more details emerged Monday about the family situation of an 11-year-old girl who was found dead inside her Brooklyn home yesterday, police continued to question the girl's mother.
A law enforcement official told the Associated Press Monday that the mother has confessed to beating the girl, Alejandra Vazquez, with a mop handle on Thursday out of hatred for the girl's father.
The source went on to say that Vazquez was chased around the apartment and beaten until the mop broke and the girl was vomiting and bleeding.
Police have so far not confirmed those reports, and the mother has not yet been charged.
Police were not called to the family's Atlantic Avenue apartment until Sunday morning. When they arrived, Vazquez was already dead in her bed.
Her mother and the mother's boyfriend were taken in for questioning.
The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.
Monday night, the East New York community gathered to mourn the girl's death.
"We all get to know our kids around the neighborhood, look out for them, you know," said neighbor Nancy Irizarry.
Vazuqez's uncle, Maragito Vazquez, said the girl came to the United States here two-months ago from Mexico to be with her mother. Now he hopes to return to Mexico Friday to bury his niece.
He says the girl was always smiling and playing and she never had any problems with anyone.
Family members say they have no words to describe the loss.
The Administration for Children's services says a teenager had recently been removed from the home, and now three other young children have been removed. Sources say their ages are one, three, and six.
"Mothers that can't handle it, there are parents that want children so bad, so hand them over," said Irizarry. "If you don't want them, don't kill them."
