Some City Council members are trying to change what they say is a confusing and unfair parking rule.

The council's transportation committee Wednesday looked into changing the rules regarding broken meters.

The current law allows drivers to park at broken meters for a maximum of one hour. But the committee says drivers should be allowed to park in the spot for the length of time indicated on street signs.

The Department of Transportation says the rule discourages vandals from breaking meters.

Council members say it leaves honest drivers with tickets they do not deserve.

"That's an example of a rule where the city says it's a deterrent rule. And yet it deters nobody from breaking the meter," said City Councilman John Liu. "And, yet penalizes thousands of people unfairly for what they considered to be a proper use of that space."

The committee is also considering legislation to replace all coin meters with Muni-meters.
Some lawmakers say that would be too costly.
