Police arrested a 15-year-old girl Wednesday in connection with the stabbing death of her 16-year-old cousin Shannon Braithwaite, who was found dead in her Crown Heights home Tuesday night.
Tiana Browne, 15, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Investigators say Braithwaite's mother, Marva, found her daughter with multiple stab wounds inside the family's apartment on Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights.
Police recovered a knife at the scene.
"I know when I saw her today, she was at peace," said Marva Braithwaite in a Wednesday night community vigil that honored her daughter. "And I know I have to keep on going. Why? Because I wasn't a reckless mother. I was there."
Neighbors placed candles in the lobby of the Braithwaites' building, and celebrated a young woman who they say was full of good intentions.
Supporters say Shannon Braithwaite had actually asked her mother to take her cousin into their home because she was having troubles.
"She wanted to save her, to turn her life around," said Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia James.
"I had a good daughter," continued Marva Braithewaite. "She wasn't on the streets. She was well respected. She did the right thing, she influenced so many."
"Be careful who you takes in in your house," said Juliet Waugh, Shannon's grandmother. "Relatives or a stranger. Always be careful of who you're leaving your kids with."
On Wednesday night, police were still investigating what led to the stabbing.
