The first Trader Joe's grocery store opened in Brooklyn Friday.
The discount food store chain opened its first shop in the borough at 130 Court Street in Downtown.
Borough President Marty Markowitz was on hand to cut the ceremonial lei of the Hawaiian-themed store.
Brooklyn residents say it is a positive addition to the changing neighborhood.
"This is a great alternative to the local supermarket,” said customer Paul Mowry. “The food is great, the prices are reasonable, and just looking in, it’s got the trademark Trader Joe's cleanliness and orderliness.”
"Its seems like the development I see going on, that I hear about, it seems like its really just taking this city into a whole new era, especially this neighborhood," said customer Ryan MacGavin.
Trader Joe's management said about 75 percent of the workers live in the neighborhood.
The store is housed in the former Independence Bank Building.
