The medical examiner took the stand today in the murder trial of Nixzmary Brown's mother, Nixzaliz Santiago.
The ME described the condition of the seven-year-old girl's body after she was discovered dead in January 2006, in her family's Brooklyn home.
Photos of her bruises were shown in court, including snapshots of Nixmary's two black eyes. The ME also testified to the fact that Nixzmary had a low body weight and was malnourished.
Nixzaliz Santiago is charged in connection to Nixzmary's death.
Prosecutors allege she ignored Nixzmary's pleas for help as she lay dying on the floor. And that she failed to stop a long pattern of abuse.
During today's testimony, Santiago often tried to divert her eyes from the pictures that were being shown.
Her husband, Nixzmary's stepfather, Cesar Rodriguez was convicted of manslaughter earlier this year. He was sentenced to 29 years in prison
