New York's unemployment rate rose by nearly one percent between July and August.

The State Labor Department said that is the largest month-to-month increase in more than 30 years.

The unemployment rate came in at 5 point 8 percent in August, compared with 5 percent in July.

New York is still below the national unemployment average of 6.1 percent.

The rise in job loss occurred despite the state’s adding more than 40,000 new jobs this year, with education, health care, tourism and government seeing the biggest gains.
